The Balance and Voluntary Movement Lab of the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education was created using an infrastructure grant from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI). We to understand how humans maintain their balance during different voluntary movements.

The research conducted in the lab focusses on how humans coordinate the straightforward acts of reaching, touching or grasping objects while standing. Everyday tasks such as these are taken for granted by able-bodied persons, but are often the source of destabilisation, falls or injury among the elderly or disabled. We seek to determine fundamental strategies for balance and voluntary movement coordination adopted by the central nervous system when humans stand.

We also conduct research into pathological aspects of posture and movement coordination by studying persons with conditions such as Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy or those who have suffered a stroke, and vestibular deficits. It is hoped that the information gained by our work can further our understanding of balance disorders in these groups and eventually be used to implement adapted rehabilitative programs.

We educate students in the field of movement sciences. The lab is open to students at undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels to participate in ongoing research projects through research practica, Masters theses, PhD theses and post doctoral training periods. By providing a stimulating environment in which students can learn the techniques necessary to perform research, we hope that the lab will contribute to the training of high skilled personnel who can contribute to the health sciences in Canadian society.

Sample reaching and pointing data collected at the BVML lab using:

  • The Vicon MX3 system,
  • 2 Bertec forceplates and
  • A custom-built 180 degree programmable light array.
